As I left my hotel room for FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, New Jersey on a cool, misty mid-August afternoon, I made several mental notes on the prospects I might see that evening, specifically on the Blue Claws roster. I wanted to make sure I was paying attention to the right players, so I could give some observations to Mike Newman. I knew I’d be studying guys like Colby Shreve, Jonathan Singleton and Sebastian Valle.

The first game I went to last season was started by Mets prospect Kyle Allen, making his first Sally League start. Here’s this young kid from Florida on a cold, blustery night in Rome facing a major league Hitter, rehabbing Atlanta Braves catcher David Ross, and not having much success. Allen looked completely overmatched against Ross and he was. Showcasing one pitch that evening, a decent two-seem fastball, Ross sat on the pitch and hit a ball over 400 feet for a home run.
Notes from Lakewood vs. Delmarva
Lakewood’s Colby Shreve was just too dominating through the first five innings to get a feel of Delmarva’s lineup. In my non-professional opinion, the Shorebirds lack any real bat speed.
