A Retrospective On Rockies Tyler Matzek

Over at Fangraphs, I posted a scouting retrospective on Tyler Matzek titled, “2011 Proves Rocky For Rockies Tyler Matzek” including information about the August 2011 start I was in attendance for. And while I saw plenty of improvement from the September 2010 start which dropped his prospect status significantly in my mind, He was still [...]

Prospect Video: Kent Matthes, OF, Colorado Rockies

Scouting video and thoughts on Colorado Rockies outfielder Kent Matthes as he looks to rebound in 2011 from a knee injury which destroyed his 2010 campaign.

Scouting Notes: Tyler Matzek, P, Colorado Rockies

Colorado Rockies pitching prospect Tyler Matzek had difficulty maintaining his stuff late in 2010. Here are scouting notes and video from the second and third time I saw him pitch in person.

Scouting Video: Nolan Arenado, 3B, Colorado Rockies

New prospect video on Colorado Rockies power hitting prospect Nolan Arenado as a member of the Asheville Tourists.

Scouting Report: Eliezer Mesa, OF, Colorado Rockies

Throughout much of the 2010 season, Eliezer Mesa sat near the top of the “Sally” batting average leaderboard. However, his season which started with a bang ended with a fizzle leaving him with a final line of .302/.357/.420 as a 21-year old. Bolstered by a home split of .352/.414/.506 in a very friendly park, Mesa struggled mightily away from home posting below league average numbers. And while Mesa’s home numbers make him seem like a power threat, make no mistake that he’s a slasher with some speed and that’s where his true value lies.

Scouting Report v2.0: Delta Cleary, OF, Colorado Rockies

Colorado Rockies outfield prospect Delta Cleary is one of the most frustrating prospects I have had the opportunity to scout extensively over the past couple of years.  For every positive to point to in Cleary’s game, a red flag exists which leaves me wondering if things will ever click for him as a prospect.  In [...]

New York Mets Wilmer Flores Heads the List for Top “Sally” Third Base Prospects

2010 was a good year for the South Atlantic League in terms of third base prospects as a plethora of young Latin American talents worked their way into and through the league. Additionally, the league played host to first round pick Kolbrin Vitek for the last couple week of the season, as well as 2009 second round Nolan Arenado, who has the best power/contact combination of any bat in the league.

Dynasty Diamond: Nolan Arenado, 3B, Colorado Rockies

Colorado Rockies third base prospect Nolan Arenado receives little fanfare compared to Jonathan Singleton of the Philadelphia Phillies. And while dynasty league owners clamor for the young first baseman, Arenado likely remains unowned in all but deeper dynasty leagues even though the 19-year old has a better slugging percentage than Singleton. Additionally, Arenado’s impressive doubles total is a sign of more home runs to come.

Game Report: Chris Balcom-Miller, P, Boston Red Sox

I was in attendance for Chris Balcolm-Miller’s best start of the 2010 season. Over seven innings, Balcolm-Miller was nearly flawless allowing no runs and only three baserunners. As impressive as he was, this report will be atypical of what I usually post.

Scouting Report: Nolan Arenado, 3B, Colorado Rockies

Arguably the most advanced hitter I have seen pass through Savannah this season, Nolan Arenado looked every bit of a second round steal throughout the four-game set. In seeing Mike Stanton, Jason Heyward, and Jesus Montero in person, Arenado is not in that class. However, his talents fit nicely amongst the second tier of hitting prospects seen alongside Logan Morrison, Freddie Freeman, Wilmer Flores, and Oakland farmhand Chris Carter.
