Game Report: J.R. Murphy, C, New York Yankees

If you have yet to check out the program down at IMG Academy in Florida, it’s worth becoming familiar with as they have produced a number of draft picks over the past few years including J.R. Murphy, Tyler Pastornicky of the Atlanta Braves, and Kyle Allen of the New York Mets. Murphy can be considered the “crown jewel” of the program thus far as his 1.25 million signing bonus is to my knowledge the highest total any IMG product has received. But does Murphy have the game to back up the price tag? Like so many catching prospects in the “Sally”, his value hinges on his remaining behind the plate which in my mind will be an uphill battle.

Dynasty Dud: Slade Heathcott, OF, New York Yankees

In seeing New York Yankees outfield prospect Slade Heathcott rank in both the top-10 prospects for Baseball America and John Sickels, I felt it was important to chime in on his value in dynasty league formats. My advice to friends and co-owners has been to sell, and sell quickly. Why? Well, because I just don’t think a player with his skill set will have much fantasy relevance when and if he reaches MLB.

Game Report: Brett Marshall, P, New York Yankees

After a successful 2010 season, New York Yankees pitching prospect Brett Marshall continues to be somewhat of a forgotten man. After returning from Tommy John Surgery, Marshall posted a 2.57 ERA over 84 innings pitched with impressive peripherals. As good as those numbers are, his August in the “Sally” was downright ridiculous as he surrendered only two earned runs over his final thirty-six innings of work at the level and did not walk a single batter in five of his final six starts overall. Having been left off the Baseball America New York Yankees top-10 list, I asked Jim Callis what he thought of the young pitcher;

Swing Analysis: Slade Heathcott, OF, New York Yankees

Earlier this week, Scouting the Sally posted a game report with video on New York Yankees prospect Slade Heathcott.  As a follow up piece, Mike Diaz spends a little time breaking down the swing of the young outfield prospect.  It’s safe to say one Mike (Diaz) is a bit more bullish on Heathcott than the [...]

Game Report: Slade Heathcott, OF, New York Yankees

Entering the 2010 season, New York Yankees centerfield prospect Slade Heathcott was considered a darling of the system after being their first round draft pick in 2009. After a season in which he scuffled a bit, how much, if any, of a hit has his prospect value taken? A .258/.359/.352 line is in the neighborhood of league average, but is it fair to expect more from a premium prospect even though he spent the entire year as a teenager at the level?

STS’s Best: The Catchers v.2010

With the minor league baseball offseason upon us, it’s time to take a look back at high profile prospects from across the “Sally” and how they fared this season. To begin, let’s take a look at the five “big name” catching prospects in the South Atlantic League this season from a scouting standpoint since I had the opportunity to watch each play in 2010. I’ll also name drop a couple of prospects to watch out for in 2011 and beyond who may not be on your radar yet as a prospect fan.

Yankees Prospect Brett Marshall Dominates the “Sally” Mets

Yankees prospect Brett Marshall turned in the most impressive pitching performance I’ve seen this season. In facing only a single batter over the minimum, Marshall used a four pitch mix including a four seam fastball, cutter, slider, and changeup to stymie the Savannah Sand Gnats, the South Atlantic League’s New York Mets affiliate.

Sharek on the “Sally”

Good friend of S.T.S. Dylan Sharek has been covering Charleston’s recent homestand and has the scoop on a number of Yankees and Braves prospects.  Through conversations with Dylan over the past few months, I’ve come to trust his insight and am confident he will carve quite a niche for himself as he continues to hone [...]

Game Report: Corban Joseph, 2B, New York Yankees

A former 4th round pick in the 2008 draft, Corban Joseph has received Chase Utley comparisons as an offense-minded second baseman. In 2009, Joseph rebounded from a slow start to post a .300/.381/.418 line showing the ability to both take a walk and limit strikeouts at an early age. Why not use Scouting the Sally [...]

Scouting the “Sally” Relievers

Yeliar Castro, Atlanta Braves: While Castro offers little in terms of projection, he can already dial the fastball up to 94 MPH. The pitch lacks movement and his command is borderline, but the velocity is hard to find at this level. Castro also flashed a 78 MPH curveball with big break 12-6 break. However, he [...]
