Marlins’ Anibal Sanchez Shows Off His Shiny New Strikeouts
While perusing the FanGraphs Team Pitching Totals page I was surprised to see the Marlins so high up on the FIP leader list. They’re ranked as 9th best in all of baseball. This is mostly a surprise because after the loss of their ace, Josh Johnson, I assumed that the pitching would certainly struggle. After Javier Vazquez’s (3.57 [...]

Game Report: Edgar Olmos, P, Florida Marlins
In seeing Olmos pitch, it was a tale of two pitchers as he cruised through the first four innings only to fall apart in the fifth before being pulled. And while his final line of 6 earned runs in 4 1/3 innings was uninspiring, I saw glimpses of a pitcher capable of being a top-10 prospect within the organization when lists are released after the 2011 season.
Pulling a “Thole” and More Minor League Memories
I keep this box in my attic of most of the programs and scorecards from my years of being a baseball fan. Every October, I bring the box down, go through the contents, add stuff that I accumulated throughout the season and then put the box back into the attic.
Swing Mechanics Sound Off!
Maybe I’m crazy, but when I first saw the size and swing of New York Mets prospect Aderlin Rodriguez, Mike Stanton popped into my head. This isn’t to say they are equal prospects by any means as Stanton is stronger, more coordinated, and has better bat speed. But if Stanton projects to be a superstar in his early twenties, isn’t any prospect who strikes even the vaguest of similarities worth mentioning? I would think so.
2010 Was A Banner Season for Prospects Scouted on STS
While working on my piece ranking the top third base prospects in the “Sally”, I began wondering how much interest would a piece about five teenage third base prospects generate on the cusp of the World Series. Lately, I’ve been pondering the future of the site and how to take a small, South Atlantic League based site to a national prospect audience. As one prospect analysis told me, my site is a niche within a niche and there’s just not a broad audience for that. However, if prospect fans looked through the archives of my site, they would see 2010 was a fantastic year for players scouted on the site over the past couple of years on a national level. Let’s look at a few of those names.
Game Report: Kyle Skipworth, C, Florida Marlins
Since being drafted sixth overall by the Florida Marlins in 2008, Kyle Skipworth has struggled to establish himself as a legitimate prospect in the eyes of scouts, as well as the Florida Marlins system. Having heard many a dig from scouts and prospect analysts alike, I simply could not pass up the opportunity to see Skipworth in person late in the 2010 season. And while I left feeling “Skip” was a little better than the information I had received, I can easily understand the motivation behind them considering a number of prospects drafted behind him would already be in Miami.
STS’s Best: The Catchers v.2010
With the minor league baseball offseason upon us, it’s time to take a look back at high profile prospects from across the “Sally” and how they fared this season. To begin, let’s take a look at the five “big name” catching prospects in the South Atlantic League this season from a scouting standpoint since I had the opportunity to watch each play in 2010. I’ll also name drop a couple of prospects to watch out for in 2011 and beyond who may not be on your radar yet as a prospect fan.
What to Expect from Logan Morrison?
Late last season I had the opportunity to catch Logan Morrison play on a couple of occasions and came away impressed. With his receiving the call to the Marlins, now is the perfect time to discuss Morrison as a hitter and what baseball fans can expect going forward. Why not use Scouting the Sally as [...]
