2010 Was A Banner Season for Prospects Scouted on STS

While working on my piece ranking the top third base prospects in the “Sally”, I began wondering how much interest would a piece about five teenage third base prospects generate on the cusp of the World Series. Lately, I’ve been pondering the future of the site and how to take a small, South Atlantic League based site to a national prospect audience. As one prospect analysis told me, my site is a niche within a niche and there’s just not a broad audience for that. However, if prospect fans looked through the archives of my site, they would see 2010 was a fantastic year for players scouted on the site over the past couple of years on a national level. Let’s look at a few of those names.

Let’s face it, Peter Gammons is an icon. When “Baseball Tonight” first started, he was the reason I tuned in. On a show which spent 98% of its air time talking about current happenings in the Major Leagues, Gammons would talk prospects at a time when few bothered to even familiarize themselves with their favorite organization’s top-10. Fast forward to baseball in the age of the Internet and fans are more educated than at any point in the history of the game. From SABR to scouting reports, baseball fans I speak to feel the need to know more than ever before. As somebody who attributes my love of prospects in part to Peter Gammons, I was surprised when he posted the following tweet.
