Dynasty Dud: Slade Heathcott, OF, New York Yankees
In seeing New York Yankees outfield prospect Slade Heathcott rank in both the top-10 prospects for Baseball America and John Sickels, I felt it was important to chime in on his value in dynasty league formats. My advice to friends and co-owners has been to sell, and sell quickly. Why? Well, because I just don’t think a player with his skill set will have much fantasy relevance when and if he reaches MLB.
Game Report: Brett Marshall, P, New York Yankees
After a successful 2010 season, New York Yankees pitching prospect Brett Marshall continues to be somewhat of a forgotten man. After returning from Tommy John Surgery, Marshall posted a 2.57 ERA over 84 innings pitched with impressive peripherals. As good as those numbers are, his August in the “Sally” was downright ridiculous as he surrendered only two earned runs over his final thirty-six innings of work at the level and did not walk a single batter in five of his final six starts overall. STS’s Best: The First Basemen v.2010
Look at the raw numbers, and prospect followers would think the first base prospect crop in the South Atlantic League was strong in 2010. Truth is after Philadelphia Phillies prospect Jonathan Singleton, the league was void of true first base prospects. However, a number of prospects at other positions are likely to slide over in time. With that said, the top five first base prospects list will include a couple of current third baseman, an outfielder, and maybe even a catcher. Blasphemy!

After a season in which he scuffled a bit, how much, if any, of a hit has his prospect value taken? A .258/.359/.352 line is in the neighborhood of league average, but is it fair to expect more from a premium prospect even though he spent the entire year as a teenager at the level?

To begin, let’s take a look at the five “big name” catching prospects in the South Atlantic League this season from a scouting standpoint since I had the opportunity to watch each play in 2010. I’ll also name drop a couple of prospects to watch out for in 2011 and beyond who may not be on your radar yet as a prospect fan.
Yankees Prospect Brett Marshall Dominates the “Sally” Mets
Yankees prospect Brett Marshall turned in the most impressive pitching performance I’ve seen this season. In facing only a single batter over the minimum, Marshall used a four pitch mix including a four seam fastball, cutter, slider, and changeup to stymie the Savannah Sand Gnats, the South Atlantic League’s New York Mets affiliate.
Trade Deadline Values: Jesus Montero vs. Wilmer Flores
Jesus Montero and Wilmer Flores became key names in internet trade banter. While both prospects are excellent in their own right, it’s important for New York baseball fans, as well as prospect fans in general to distinguish between the two. In ranking the top-25 prospects I’ve seen since starting Scouting the Sally, Montero ranks 3rd, while Flores currently sits 8th. On paper, this is not a major difference, but in reality, if Montero were an “A” prospect, then Flores would likely be a “B+”.
