Pulling a “Thole” and More Minor League Memories

I keep this box in my attic of most of the programs and scorecards from my years of being a baseball fan. Every October, I bring the box down, go through the contents, add stuff that I accumulated throughout the season and then put the box back into the attic.

New York Mets Wilmer Flores Heads the List for Top “Sally” Third Base Prospects

2010 was a good year for the South Atlantic League in terms of third base prospects as a plethora of young Latin American talents worked their way into and through the league. Additionally, the league played host to first round pick Kolbrin Vitek for the last couple week of the season, as well as 2009 second round Nolan Arenado, who has the best power/contact combination of any bat in the league.

Breaking Down Baseball America’s “Sally” Top 20 for 2009 Part 3

The third and final piece to the top 20 puzzle are the omissions who could have been included. Baseball America’s “Sally” top 20 included a number of early 20′s talents which led to the exclusion of a handful of worthy teens. Let’s look at a few. As a side note, I found it interesting Anthony [...]

Breaking Down Baseball America’s “Sally” Top 20 for 2009 Part 2

To build on part one of breaking down Baseball America’s “Sally” rankings, part two will focus on prospects eleven through twenty. While I did not see Rudy Owens in person, a 21-year old lefty with a plus change is going to have success in the “Sally”. Kudos to Owens on a great season, but there [...]

Breaking Down Baseball America’s “Sally” Top 20 for 2009 Part 1

With Baseball America’s track record pegging top prospects in the Sally, it’s difficult for me to pen a piece like this in which I’m forced to go against quite a bit of their recently released South Atlantic League top 20 prospects list. Maybe I’m a bit pretentious, but I was able to see a number [...]

S.T.S’s Best: The Catchers

As the weeks pass, I’ll be breaking down the Sally’s best by position. As a former catcher, I found it fitting to begin with the best catchers the Sally had in 2009. Please keep in mind, this will not be based on potential fantasy value, but on the combination of offensive/defensive ability combined with the [...]

Maximum Velocity

With my polishing off a scouting piece on Red Sox prospect Will Middlebrooks today, I am not going to be able to pen another full piece before going back to work tomorrow so I wanted to begin to share some raw data from the 2009 Sally season for readers to feast on. To start, here [...]

Fun with Sally Equivalences

Readers have been asking for information on a number of older players in the Sally who are having good seasons. While I’m always up for answering just about any question which is Sally related, I wanted to take the opportunity to run a few equivalences to examine where a few of these guys should be [...]

Brett DeVall vs. Jeurys Familia Tonight!

Once again, I’ll be checking out the Savannah Sand Gnats as they take on the Rome Braves and 2008 supplemental first round pick Brett DeVall. DeVall is off to quite a start in 2009 as he has posted a 1.96 ERA in 7 starts. Jeurys Familia, a personal favorite, looks to rebound as his last [...]

Pitching, Outfield Talent Coming to the SAL

As I sat at home last night watching round one of the 2009 Major League Baseball draft, it quickly became clear a number of top arms an outfield bats were likely Sally bound for the 2010 season with a few college players possibly debuting towards the end of the 2009 season. Here are the first [...]
