The Night in Tweets: Hickory @ Savannah Game 1

Tonight was a busy evening at the ballpark. With this being the first of a four-game set, I spent much of the game behind home plate watching and tweeting the action. With the sheer number of tweets, I found it fitting to combine all of the tweets into a single post. If you are not [...]

News & Notes from Savannah @ Rome

This email was sent to me by Chris Blessing, who I have had a running conversation about Mets prospects for the past couple of years. He offered to chime in from time-to-time throughout the 2010 season to provide information from Rome. This is not a scouting report per-say, but I have grown to trust Chris’ [...]

“Sally” Stock Watch

With the first homestand in the books, I spent some time thinking about the best way to provide readers with a quick recap of the entire series in terms of which prospects impressed and depressed. It seems to be a down season in the South Atlantic League for premium talent, but the West Virginia Power, Augusta GreenJackets, and Savannah Sand Gnats all have sleepers worth keeping an eye on as the season progresses.

Savannah vs. West Virginia: Game 4 Wrap up

On Sunday, Savannah lost 6-1 to the Power in an uninspired effort in which they were outhit and shut down by Quinton Miller and two relievers.  To read more about Quinton Miller and other Pirates prospects in the series, read my West Virginia game wraps over at Bucs Prospects. Why not use Scouting the Sally [...]

Savannah vs. West Virginia: Game 3 Wrap Up

If the core of this Savannah Sand Gnats team stays together throughout the 2010 season, the team is a “Sally” championship contender.  Their older staff should continue to chew up and spit out younger competition.  The outfield defense has improved considerably and the holes in the 2009 lineup have been filled with older organizational players [...]

Savannah vs. West Virginia: Game 2 Wrap Up

Game two in the books for the Savannah Sand Gnats and still no sign of third-baseman Jefry Marte.  However, the Sand Gnats were still able to take game two of the four-game set versus the West Virginia Power with ease.  Wilmer Flores continued his hot start with two more hits putting him at 5/9 on [...]

Savannah vs. West Virginia: Opening Night Wrap Up

I spoke to a scout once who commented that he felt guilty for wishing empty stadiums on the teams he visited, but it sure did make his job easier.  That pretty much summed up my evening as the Savannah Sand Gnats had a packed house on opening night.  It was great to see the stadium [...]

Scouting Report: Wilmer Flores, SS, New York Mets

Wilmer Flores’ 2009 season started with a thud and ended with a fizzle. In-between was a period of productive baseball which saw Flores’ batting average approach .300. Due to poor power numbers and a likely position change in the future, Flores’ prospect stock has taken a hit as the 2010 season creeps closer. With his [...]

Breaking Down Baseball America’s “Sally” Top 20 for 2009 Part 1

With Baseball America’s track record pegging top prospects in the Sally, it’s difficult for me to pen a piece like this in which I’m forced to go against quite a bit of their recently released South Atlantic League top 20 prospects list. Maybe I’m a bit pretentious, but I was able to see a number [...]

Another Critique Request

After reading my critique of Joe DeMayo’s post season top 50 Mets prospects, Tej over at Mets Prospect Hub asked me if I would do the same for his top 60 and I figured why not? Once again, delving so deep into a relatively thin organization is awfully hard from a prospect standpoint so much [...]
